Christmas Shocker

Just as a 55-year-old man in a 28-year old marriage gave a very shocking christmas 'present' to his wife and children yesterday did I receive a shocking experience on christmas day.

I stayed back in Owerri because of some things I wanted to attend to.At a time the environment became deserted and boring that I became uncomfortable with the situation. There was no power supply nor water,everywhere was 'dry.'

It was already 25th December and I had to leave for Onitsha with a friend of mine.As we got to the populous city,we went to the area known as Awada.Later in the day,we decided to move to Okpoko to fraternize with friends.As we were walking down to Okpoko,we took an apian way to make our journey shorter.We moved through the area known as Mammy.

I learnt that Mammy is an Army Barrack,that is Onitsha Military Cantonment.Cantonment should be a temporary or semi-permanent military quarters. It can also describe permanent military stations.In this case it was more of a zone for commercial sex workers.

I have always seen prostitution dramatised in home-videos but have not met prostitutes in action.Nollywood often show you and I,scenes where mature ladies stand by the wayside,mostly at night waiting for men that will employ them as sex machines for a mere token of money.

What a surprise! As we entered Mammy proper in the broad day light,we met women of various colours,ages,heights and shapes standing along the narrow path.Many of them dressed to kill, posing along that way.They were giving us signs to come for them-this they did with their hands,words,eyes and body movements.

There and then I felt sorry for them and on the otherhand embarrassed. One of them even told me to come so that we will celebrate the christmas together.Imagine that !

As people attended services in commemoration of the birth of Jesus Christ,others took to the streets,dressed in skimpy wears and looking for whom to devour.On the other hand,some shameless men have made it an easy avenue to satisfy their promiscuous lives.With the daily increase in the number of AIDS patients in our society,plus other sexually transmitted diseases,those commercial sex workers have taken their destinies in their own hands.

Though I knew that such a thing was obtainable,I never knew that it could be done in the broad-day-light and christmas day for that matter.Maybe I need to learn more.Evidently,these ladies that are sexually exploited everyday could be the sister or daughter of anybody.For crying out loud,they are part of our society.

Let the government and church wake-up to their responsibilities.Every hand should be on deck.Everybody should imbibe selfcontrol as a way of curbing this ugly trend.

Co-habitation

A recent programme of Vision Africa Radio(104.1fm,Umuahia) focused on 'Co-habitation.' They tried discussing the reasons why people,especially young people co-habit,the benefits if any and the dangers of co-habitation.It is no longer strange to see in our society,men and women(neither blood-related nor legally married)living together under the same roof as in a legitimate marriage.Obviously,topics like this one are rarely discussed in programmes on television or over the radio stations,rather these stations usually hold programmes that seek to find and pair up boys and girls and could lead to co-habitation. Co-habitation is an act of living together(usually of a man and woman) and having sexual relationship without being married unlike marriage which is a formal union of a man and woman,typically as recognised by law ,by which they become husband and wife. The Second Stanza Of The National Anthem: A National Prayer

The Nigerian National Anthem is usually performed at major events having to do with national pride,such as the President's address,major sporting events and at school where it is usually accompanied by Nigeria's National Pledge. The anthem was adopted in 1978. The lyrics are a combination of words and phrases taken from five of the best entries in a national contest. The words were put to music by the Nigerian Police Band under the directorship of Benedict Elise Odiase. Unarguably,many people are conversant with the first stanza of the anthem and the National Pledge but the second stanza is rarely sung by people. This has made the stanza almost forgotten by Nigerian even some leaders. As we celebrate our independence again and 49years of much struggle without reasonable achievements,lets reflect on the second stanza of our anthem,believing that things will be better. I believe that the proper understanding of this stanza may make us change our wrong notions against our nation.
