Christmas Shocker

Just as a 55-year-old man in a 28-year old marriage gave a very shocking christmas 'present' to his wife and children yesterday did I receive a shocking experience on christmas day. I stayed back in Owerri because of some things I wanted to attend to.At a time the environment became deserted and boring that I became uncomfortable with the situation. There was no power supply nor water, everywhere was 'dry.' It was already 25th December and I had to leave for Onitsha with a friend of mine.As we got to the populous city,we went to the area known as Awada.Later in the day,we decided to move to Okpoko to fraternize with friends. As we were walking down to Okpoko,we took an apian way to make our journey shorter. We moved through the area known as Mammy. I learnt that Mammy is an Army Barrack, that is Onitsha Military Cantonment.Cantonment should be a temporary or semi-permanent military quarters. It can also describe permanent military stations. In this case it was more of a zone

Churg-Strauss Syndrome--A Battle For Mr President

On November 23,2009,Mr President,Alhaji Umaru Yar'Adua was hurriedly flown to Jeddah, Saudi Arabia via an air ambulance for treatment. For over a month,he has remained in the hospital in a critical condition. The fate of the country remains in God's hands as different groups are beginning to raise 'ugly' heads. He was diagnosed of acute pericarditis ,which is the inflammation of the pericardium(the covering of the heart).Doctors said that the condition is closely linked to the kidney problem he has. Uremia (the accumulation of urea in the blood as a result of the inability of the diseased kidney to effectively excrete it) was blamed for it. Medical experts said that he is suffering from Churg-Strauss Syndrome. Churg-Strauss Syndrome(also known as allergic granulomatosis) is a medium and small vessel auto-immune vasculitis, leading to necrosis. It involves mainly the blood vessels of the lung(it begins as a severe type of asthma),gastrointestinal system, and peripheral ner

...And He Died.

A day usually marks the beginning of the life on earth of every creature including humans.A day on the other hand marks the death of every creature. Some animals that lived several years ago are no longer in existence. Some have long gone into extinction while some are at the brink of extinction. Click Here or here to see the maximum number of years different animals could live. Evolution told us some lies that is very dangerous to believe. The oldest recognised person on record is Jeanne Calment,a french woman who lived for 122 years and 164 days. Maximum recorded lifespan for humans has remained about 105-122 calendar years throughout recorded history, despite steady improvements in life expectancy. Methuselah lived for 969 years, which should be the highest according to the Bible. Some animals such as birds and squirrels rarely live to their maximum life span, usually dying of accidents, disease or predation. Grazing animals accumulate wear and tear to their teeth to the point where

The Day Of Reckoning

As I look around me,I see many strange things happening, all pointing to the end of this present life. The thought of eternity ignites my fear and passion to unrelently forge ahead in this earthly race. I started thinking about life after death and it occured to me that everybody born of a woman, breathing and doing one thing or the other for sustainance will live for eternity. It is the desire of everybody to live long. Anybody can live for seventy years, eighty years, hundred years or even two hundred years but after everything death has a way of intervening. Another suprising and mysterious thing about this is that some die few seconds, hours or days after birth. Some die in the womb, others die as teenagers, some die as adults. People of different age brackets die and are never seen again. Have you seen any dead man living again,if not for some insignificant few allowed by God? At this point, lets forget about death because it will definitely come knocking anyday. God can decide to give

Difference Makers

We are in a society where you may not be able to differentiate between a mad man and a mechanic. Everybody is a saint. I get suprised when I see people trying to deceive others around them. We are in this unfavourable state because we have a very few or no men and women of integrity. To make a difference is to have an effect on something or somebody. I am not just talking about any difference but a positive one. Positive difference entails seeing things change for good in any given environment. Positive change starts from a positive change of heart and habits. Before we talk about difference, some people should be seasoned enough to stand and effect the needed change even in the midst of great opposition. How many people see telling lies, giving and receiving bribe,or any act of corruption as a hinderance to any positive change? Instead, we have a crop of people that have accepted evil as a normal way of life. It is a pity because any place where there is no integrity, corruption dom

My Eye-Opener

In a twinkling of an eye, the Asuu strike came to stay. Before then,we heard rumours of an impending strike coupled with the internal problems of my own university. The news of more than 100% increment in the tuition fees of my school forced some angry students to the streets in protest against the decision of the school authorities. Not short after the incident, the fear of the students made the school authorities to extend the then concluded Easter break. We stayed at home more than necessary though we did not understand it all.Just as we were permitted to resume studies, the Asuu strike struck. It was on June 22 and we went back home for an indefinite strike. As a medical student who had a professional examination to sit for,I was greatly troubled because I needed to study and prepare. The strike started, moved into days, weeks and the first month with no glimpse of hope coming from the federal government. I stayed back in school in a bid to study but did not achieve much because my i

'The Steeple-Chase'

It was more than just an exam. It was actually a race. Steeple-chase is supposed to be a long race in which horses have to jump over fences, water et cet-era or a long race in which people run and jump over gates and water,et cet-era around a track. This is all about the practical exam I took yesterday. It was an anatomy practical exam. Before then,I heard people call it 'steeple-chase' but did not know that it was the actual name of the exam. It was an interesting 'race' indeed, with many 'fences' to cross. There was a track. Everyone maintained a straight line, with each person standing exactly posterior to his colleague. There was a time keeper with his stopwatch and bell for time regulation. Every participant(the students) wore a laboratory coat tagged with his or her matriculation number. I was one of the contestants. The about sixty 'hurdles' were arranged in such a way that you have to 'jump' each one or loose some points. They were actually

'Our Church'

I have been away for a long time from the internet due to my tight schedule. I have been reading for my ongoing examination. Sleepless nights and midnight candles have taken over for some time now. I hadn't time for myself not to talk of other necessary things. I was priviledged to visit someone today but ended up being offended-just because of denominational claims. I cannot because of public opinion decide to swallow an obvious 'rubbish'. People have resorted to deceiving themselves by just hiding under the umbrella of denomination. People are quick to claim that they are members of a particular popular church denomination but are mere 'noisemakers' with little or nothing to show the impact of God's word in their lives. I visited a 'church' in Owerri recently just to worship God and fellowship with others with a friend of mine and someone came up later to say,'You came to our church.' He could be right by making that statement but an x-ray of

Becoming A Child

A child is a young human being who IS NOT an adult. A child is also a person who is STRONGLY INFLUENCED by the ideas and attitudes of a particular time or person. It may interest you to know that we were all made to become 'children' and not just children but children of our Father. One becomes what he/she is not. For instance,a student becomes a graduate after going to school,an illiterate person becomes literate after being under a professional's tutelage. For a better vista of this,it will be good to know that for an illiterate person to become literate, there was a sort of transformation brought about by a higher external force. The transformation on it own cannot take place without the presence of the one to be transformed,it requires the person's availability and consent. Though we are adults by age, there is the need for the positive transformation that will give birth to 'children' with child-like minds and hearts. Jesus in His speech made a captivating bu

The Power Holding Company of Nigeria(abbreviated PHCN),formerly the National Electric Power Authority(abbreviated NEPA)is an organisation governing the use of electricity in Nigeria. The company runs a football team,Nepa Lagos. The merger of the Niger Dam Authorities(NDA-setup in 1962 to develop the economic potentials of the Niger River)and Electricity Cooperation(ECN-created by the government in 1950 to generate and transmit power nationally)culminated to the National Electric Power Authority(NEPA-which is an agency established as a semiautonomous government activity). As part of its mandate, the NDA had constructed the Kainji Dam and associated hydroelectric plant, which began operations in 1968.NEPA changed its nomenclature to PHCN.For several years despite consistent perceived cash investment by the Federal Government, power outages have been the standard for the Nigerian populace, and are now see as normal by the citizens of the country. The government divided the current PHCN distribu

Are You Ready To Die? ~2~

Now let's say that one in ten people are genuine born-again Believers. We are clearly told in Matthew 7:14 that few people ever make it to heaven! 'Because strait is the gate, and narrow is the way which leadeth unto life, and few there be that find it'(Matthew 7:14;Luke 13:23,24). Also,Luke 12:7 tells us,-'But even the very hairs of your head are all numbered..'If I had just a dime every time I heard someone say ,'Gee,life is so short',I'd be a multi-millionaire,and I'm sure you would too. Additionally, did you know the average(adult 18yrs and older) heart beats 72times a minute? That comes to 4320times an hour! or 103,680times per day!! It's very sobering when you think about it. Every 24hrs,your heart beats 103,680times!! What we do not know, however,is which of those 103,680 heartbeats will be our last!! How tragic! How horrible! Honestly,I would be very surprised if more than one out of every hundred people are truly saved and on their way to h

Are You Ready To Die? ~1~

My Friends, let me ask you all a question. What if your doctor told you that you only had 6months to live? How would you spend those last 6months of your life here on earth? When I ask most people this question when witnessing to them, the majority of them tell me,'well,I'd spend those last 6months getting my personal things in order. Then I'd want to do things I've always wanted to do like sky dive, climb a mountain, travel and spend time with my wife and kids.' Now...I follow that question up with another question, only this time,I ask,'what if you knew,positively,absolutely-for sure-that you would die in just one day-twenty four hours from now? How would you spend those last 24hours of your life here on earth. The same people, then tell me,'Gee,I'd spend those last 24hours contacting friends, family members, even the ones I've estranged from, and other loved ones I may have hurt in the past,or who may have hurt me,just to tell them I love them. And I'd

Captain Cornelius: A Nice Guy

Cornelius simply means Sun-Beam. His story can be found in the Holy Bible, precisely in the tenth chapter of the book of 'Acts of the Apostles'.He was a captain of Italian Regiment(cohort or regiment of about 555 infantry and 66 cavalry). He was the captain of 100men in the Roman army.He and his house were the first gentiles to hear the gospel since pentecost. Until then,it didn't occur to the church that anyone could be saved unless he was circumcised and kept the law of moses. This fallacy would have continued if God had not intervened and convinced Peter and through him all other apostles. He was a devout man who venerated God and trusted Him with reverential obedience. He was well spoken of by the whole jewish nation, just, upright, had right standing with God. That was also the case with his household. He gave much alms to people and prayed regularly to God. It's quite interesting! Cornelius was a nice guy with a conglomeration of these qualities in his coffers. He was

Women: Wonderful Creatures

Genetics teaches that the X-chromosome(representing the female) of the sperm cell outlives the Y-chromosome that represents the male. This shows that even in that small form, females are strong.I also learnt that all the mitochondria present in every human cell are solely donated by the woman(by the egg during the process of fertilization). Can you take that? Fortunately, the mitochondrion is the 'power house' of the cell, providing almost,if not all,the energy needed by the body for optimum performance.Women are wonderful.Though naturally weak per se,they're strong. Many things about them make them unique and indispensable on earth.Far back in the garden of Eden,God made her from man.The man was carrying the male and female qualities within before the surgery that brought the woman out.It will be wrong to think that the men and women are similar. They are more in number, accounting for about 52% of the world's population even though Nigeria's record is different. There a

The Engagement Ring: Not A Licence

The engagement ring has been known by many different names, have symbolised a variety of different things and have not always been made of precious metals and stunning gems. The ancient Greeks are thought to have been the forerunners in the using of the traditional engagement ring. Given as a token of care and affection, the rings used by the greeks were known as betrothal rings and were given before marriage. However, the giving of these rings was not always a pre-requisite to marriage. As seen by their use of wedding ring, ancient Romans weren't the most sentimental of people and the early version of their 'engagement ring' were thought to be carved key on them. It has been debated that this could have been to symbolise the woman's right to access and own half of everything following marriage. The more sentimental like to think that the key may have been a key to her husband's heart. Engagement rings-stunning gems encased in precious metals-became popular in around th

The Call For Service

It is no longer a secret that there are many 'worship centres' in every nook and cranny of our society. Day by day, churches erupt in our streets and people troop in and out seeking solace and solution to their problems(most of which are spiritual). There is a vacuum in the hearts of people which they try to fill by having a devoted fellowship with a deity. Some worship lifeless objects which they believe can profer solution to their problems. Others worship trees, animals ,even heavenly bodies like the sun, moon, planets and stars. Some even worship themselves and things that are better referred to as insignificant and negligible. The choice of the deity worshipped is dependent on the trust, availability, supremacy, invincibility and special ability of the deity. Many claim to be worshipping God,the creator of heaven, earth and everything in the world but their approach is usually different,as they have some dogmatic beliefs that make them unique. In christianity, which is the religio

The Second Stanza Of The National Anthem: A National Prayer

The Nigerian National Anthem is usually performed at major events having to do with national pride, such as the President's address, major sporting events and at school where it is usually accompanied by Nigeria's National Pledge. The anthem was adopted in 1978. The lyrics are a combination of words and phrases taken from five of the best entries in a national contest. The words were put to music by the Nigerian Police Band under the directorship of Benedict Elise Odiase. Unarguably, many people are conversant with the first stanza of the anthem and the National Pledge but the second stanza is rarely sung by people. This has made the stanza almost forgotten by Nigerian even some leaders. As we celebrate our independence again and 49years of much struggle without reasonable achievements, lets reflect on the second stanza of our anthem, believing that things will be better. I believe that the proper understanding of this stanza may make us change our wrong notions against our nation.

For Married Couples: Solving Problems In Marriage(Contd)

Some things should be avoided in solving family problems. A spouse should not shout when talking to the partner especially before their children. It does not solve the problem. Dont share your problems with anybody even your best friend. The person you may go to is your pastor. I mean someone that is really a pastor and not the one that will use it as a case study in his message. Dont breakdown and start weeping before your husband or wife. Say the problem in plain language. Dont refuse to eat the food cooked by your wife and shun communication with her. Dont even mention divorce or compare him or her with others around. Have a forgiving spirit and

For Married Couples: Solving Problems In Marriage

I was priviledged to witness a marriage ceremony in my church today. It has been a long time I witnessed it. It was a joyful and warm atmosphere indeed. The experience made me to cogitate about my nearest future(If Christ tarries). I will be releasing the secret of success in marriage as I learnt. The home can be likened to a garden. In the garden, you can find some weeds and thorns which are unwanted and are not supposed to be there. In a home, there may be some 'weeds' that should be removed. The 'weeds' can be likened to problems but it is the responsibility of the couple to remove them outright. It is only when you put sticks in fire that you will know the one that has a snake in it. Until you marry, your true nature may not manifest. Trouble in the home brings out your true character. May God grant you the grace to change the things you can change, the grace to accept the things you cannot change and the grace to differentiate between the two.

The Fear Of The Unknown

Fear is a panic or distress caused by a sense of impending danger, pain, etc. It is an unpleasant emotion caused by the threat of danger, pain or harm. Many people are afraid without knowing what they are anxious about. Many things have happened. Enough water of varied colours has passed under the bridge. Events of different types came and have gone. Earthquakes, tsunamis, wars, great armed robbery attacks, kidnaps, suicide bombings, assassinations, economic meltdown(global recession),threatening unfavourable climatic changes, existence of more deadly diseases, political prostitution, spiritual prostitution, adverse effects of scientific discoveries, gross illiteracy, abject poverty, militancy, racism and many more. Many egregious things have occured in the past to the extent that no one knows the next one. We hear that solutions have been given existing problems only to hear again that the conditions have been worsened. In this country,we are left to sleep with our eyes wide open, waiting to respond to

IT IS NOT MY FAULT:The reason for my comments in Adepoju Paul's recent note(My Facebook Friends) and other actions of mine.

Some time ago,i was discussing something with somebody in my hostel about some controversial issues and he consciously said something. He said, 'I dont like arguing with you because you engage in christian arguments'. That was not enough for him or did not explain what he had in mind and he added,'infact you make pentecostal arguments'. I laughed and was very happy within me because of that good report. My discussions and contributions in facebook and other places may be termed 'strange' by some people but dont get offended because it is not my fault. Something caused it. In Paul's recent note,he was talking about his facebook friends but at a time he talked of 'religious' people. He mentioned people that have affected his life positively. Just as a way of going straight to the point,i was not comfortable with the way he talked of some as being religious. At a time, i questioned where he actually belongs, whether he is a christian or a pagan. That was

The New Face of Aba ~2~

I was trying to narrate the bad look of things in Aba in my previous write-up. In that article,i concentrated in the popular 'Faulks Road'. To digress a bit,i was flabbergasted that even in the heart of Owerri, some roads are very bad. Just few day ago,i left Aba for a meeting in the SU House located along Chukwuma Nwoha Road in Owerri. At about 7.00pm in the evening along the aforementioned road(just close to the Egbu road),i saw another 'artificial lake' that completely divided the road. I was already seeing where i was going to from there. To cut the story short, i had to pay a sum of 50naira so as to cross over to the other side of the road on a boy's back. I was really astonished by that sight because i thought it was only obtainable here in Aba. Owerri-Aba express way will be a story for another day. Back to Aba,the Enyimba city. I suffered pains in my whole body due to the 'long jumps' i performed while trying to go through the 'apian ways&

The New Face of Aba

After being away for a long period of time from this populous city,i came in just some days ago, only to see the deplorable situation of things.I have been away from Aba for nearly 9weeks. After the inception of the protracted Asuu strike on June 22,i stayed back in school for some weeks. I was unable to continue the stay because everywhere was becoming deserted and i was loosing my enthusiasm for studying. I returned to Aba to be with my family once again. I stayed there for about 16days and returned to school. There i stayed for weeks. From there i made trips to Akokwa(the hometown of one of my friends),Onitsha(Okpoko to be precise),Okigwe(for SU Okigwe Regional Conference) and Abuja(for a youth empowerment conference). I was born and raised in Aba but i have not seen it in its present state before. It was on Saturday last week that i came into Aba at about 10.30pm directly from Abuja. As the Chisco bus i went with stopped at 'Brass Junction',i alighted. I walked down home. The

'The Means Justifies...'

I have always been left to wonder why things are the way they are.In our society, many things are wrongly accepted.Accepting a so-called 'popular' thing has never helped us.Notorious things that should be avoided are now accepted and lived with.Imagine the outcome.Imagine a situation where a person takes a red-hot coal into his bosom. Will he not expect burns? Actually,he who gathers ant-infested firewood will end up unknowingly calling the lizards for a feast. That is the case with our generation. Many things widely accepted end up being the wrong things. Some say that everything is a matter of choice while others say that things are 'relative'.This mentality has caused many to do the wrong things without any reasonable consideration of the end. Some axioms are mere charades that can only land their victims into serious regrettable conditions.I guess that i may be sounding 'somehow' but never mind.It is very dangerous to be silent while things are going wrong only

This kind God!(Good out of evil)

My good people,i want to begin to gist you in this special series(This kind God!) on some great ,strange,miraculous,faith-giving testimonies of some people which i am sure will help you and teach you some good lessons. The testimonies are real and not forged.I will have to start with this one in this episode. This one is about a man who was to defend his doctorate degree(PHD)project. On that particular day,the professors who were to supervise it were there. The projector, generating set, laptop and other things needed for his defence were ready with the professors waiting to do what they know well. The generator was started,it worked for some seconds and stopped. The same thing happened to the second generator he hired. You may be wondering what the cause of the problem actually was....Satan pressing some dangerous buttons?Somebody in the village making some enchantments?Luck against him?Or....?He went out and borrowed a third bigger and newer generator. This time around, the generator did not b
