My Eye-Opener
In a twinkling of an eye, the Asuu strike came to stay. Before then,we heard rumours of an impending strike coupled with the internal problems of my own university. The news of more than 100% increment in the tuition fees of my school forced some angry students to the streets in protest against the decision of the school authorities. Not short after the incident, the fear of the students made the school authorities to extend the then concluded Easter break. We stayed at home more than necessary though we did not understand it all.Just as we were permitted to resume studies, the Asuu strike struck. It was on June 22 and we went back home for an indefinite strike. As a medical student who had a professional examination to sit for,I was greatly troubled because I needed to study and prepare. The strike started, moved into days, weeks and the first month with no glimpse of hope coming from the federal government. I stayed back in school in a bid to study but did not achieve much because my interest was not whet. I became less of a student and at a time decided to go back home. I lost all enthusiasm to study as the strike continued because I with every other person did not know when it will actually come to an end. At about the time the strike entered the fourth month, the Edo State Governor,Comrade Adams Oshiomole became the mediator between the warring parties. Suddenly, the strike was suspended for two weeks and later completely called off. The news of the called off strike came with the news of my mock MB Exam which was just three weeks away. I hurriedly went back to school and started preparations. Though it was supposed to be the revision of the things done in a space of four years,it was a difficult task because of the great volume of work. Infact, some things received no first touch as of then-imagine that. The revision was done haphazardly as I tried to touch almost everything. Before I knew what was happening, the timetable 'appeared' and the exam started. It was fully loaded with no breathing space for complete nine days. The exams came in many forms-theory,multiple choice questions(MCQ),practicals(that included steeple-chase) and viva. Of a truth,it was not easy but an eye-opener. Though 'residual knowledge' played a vital role, I learnt my lessons. Many things were clearer to me. The mock exam showed me some deficiencies. The viva was the last phase of the exam and really showed me many loopholes. I have been studying and will continue to study but with a better vista of how to approach things this time around. The main exam will be coming in less than two weeks time and I hope to be better to face it. The strike caused more harm than good to my studies. The mock on the other hand helped me to prepare and opened my eyes to my emptiness. I need God to whet my interest and enthusiasm to move back to the drawing board in order to put things in place. Who knows what would have happened without the mock. Thank God for the mock-my eye-opener.
