Road Checkpoints:Who Are Those Involved?

In my secondary school days,we had barricades at strategic locations.Being a former Teachers Training College,my Alma Mater is located on a vast expanse of land. The school could be larger than the university that I am schooling in presently, which is more of a glorified secondary school. The school was not fenced, had no gate and looked more of a village. Some of the paths within the school premises were barricaded to check the movement of vehicles and individuals.Similar barricades have come to be on our highways. I've been privileged to visit different parts of this great nation, mostly by road and will always come across checkpoints, where vehicles are stopped for scrutiny peradventure there are offences against the rules guiding road usage. The law guiding the road users and the people that instituted it had good intentions. It must have been done for the peace and security of road users.Nowadays, constant road users will agree with me that there are numerous and sometimes unnecessary ...

Self Discipline:A Recipe For Success

All my life,I have tried to make a part of me,some godly principles that have so much guided my daily actions.I've done some 'strange' things overlooked in our society.I find it difficult doing them but don't have choice because it simply differentiates me from the intimidating multitude. Self-discipline is the ability to make yourself do something especially something difficult or unpleasant. It takes a well co-ordinated person to do even the minor and negligible things in life.It takes discipline to even bath on a daily basis. That sounds ridiculous but obviously true. The reason for the substandard services rendered or the care-free and lackadaisical approach to ones responsibilities is simply indiscipline.Success in ones endeavours can always be traced to self-discipline.There's no one that have ever achieved a great feat without an iota of discipline. It's absence only draws one closer to failure. Discipline is not easy at all but accrues great benefits when i...

Notorious York:The Uncommon Zone In Aba

Residents of Aba,the Enyimba city, together with regular visitors to Aba are likely to be very aware of the notorious 'York Street' popular known as 'York,'located in the heart of Aba Main Park. Aba is a very populous commercial city in Abia State. It is the native land of the famous Ngwa people, who form a large percentage of the inhabitants.Despite being heavily occupied by Ngwa people,it also houses people of different tribes.People from Igbo-speaking states(Anambra,Imo,Enugu and Ebonyi)are also in the city in search of greener pastures.Yorubas and hausas are not left out.Almost people from every tribe in the country are found in Aba,in search of white-collar jobs. Aba is comprised of different local government areas which include Aba North,Aba South,Obingwa and Osisioma.Other LGAs may be in Aba. York is a very short street of few metres located just within Aba main park.It connects the famous Aba-Owerri road to Park road.At one end of the street is a new generation ban...

Self Discovery-A Potent Recipe

I once asked a young beautiful lady that I met wearing high-heeled footwear that almost condemned her ankle, why she wore a slippers of that height. She ended up complaining ardently, saying that her course-mates will always mock her due to her small stature, which made her to think of improving her stature.Pronto,I had to sharply rebuke her for ignorance, inferiority complex and poor/low self-esteem. The lack of self discovery is obviously, the prime cause of people's strange attitudes in our society.Self discovery is the act or process of finding or knowing the truth that was not known about you before. It is the act of knowing the real identity and make-up.It transcends just knowing that you're human. It tells you that everything about you(whether deformed or not) is special against people's belief. The behavioural difficulties seen in people are the culmination of poor self-esteem,timidity and inferiority complex. When people shamelessly display arrogance and rudeness,it simp...

Co-habitation

A recent programme of Vision Africa Radio(104.1fm,Umuahia) focused on 'Co-habitation.' They tried discussing the reasons why people, especially young people co-habit,the benefits if any and the dangers of co-habitation.It is no longer strange to see in our society, men and women(neither blood-related nor legally married)living together under the same roof as in a legitimate marriage.Obviously, topics like this one are rarely discussed in programmes on television or over the radio stations, rather these stations usually hold programmes that seek to find and pair up boys and girls and could lead to co-habitation. Co-habitation is an act of living together(usually of a man and woman) and having sexual relationship without being married unlike marriage which is a formal union of a man and woman, typically as recognised by law ,by which they become husband and wife. As a person that has been living in a university environment for over five years,I can boldly attest to the the fact that ...

A Gift From My Heart

Every city is becoming hotter and hotter as the day gradually approaches. The hotels, brothels, charlets and guest houses are getting saturated, even those that are merely conspicuous. Those of them that lacked patronage in the past are now favourites because everyone is scrambling for space for their own shows. There is a sudden increase in the demand of many commodities as in christmas.Everyone is fully aware, the news is in the air, boys and girls are all agog at the thought of the day.Married men and women are not left out because plans are already on the way.Hills are being levelled while valleys are being filled in serious preparation for that particular day . Owerri,a town with countless hospitality centres is a good example. There are shows being organised to take place in almost every corner. Some churches are also up with their programmes both for youths and adults in commemoration of the event. Saint Valentine's day is an annual christian or cultural holiday observed by many cou...

...Do Not Be Deceived!

There is an ugly trend that I have personally noticed in our society. For over a decade,it has been dominant. It is fast becoming a culture. Of a truth,it looks like a negligible issue but must be appropriately addressed for the sake of preserving the truth for posterity.I am not in any way surprised by the large number of people that may have been deceived or rather confused. At this juncture,I want to ask some questions. Please help me to answer them and dont shun them. Are we all christians? Are all those who go to church on sundays christians? Do we become christians by virtue of our parentage and good upbringing? Are we christians by virtue of our good morals, decent appearance or good works?Does taking responsibilities in the church convince one that he/she is a christian?Does baptism make us christians? Are you still there?I have some more questions. Are we christians because we get the things we desire from God at ease? Are we christians because we even speaks in other tongues? Are w...
